Register Early!

You'll want to have you gift registry set up at least three months before the wedding. Otherwise, you may start to receive gifts you didn't want and you'll have no easy way to return the gift your cousin bought you from his local store 2000 miles away. Everybody benefits from a gift registry (many of which are available online). You benefit by receiving gifts you actually want instead of ending up with three deluxe toasters. Your guests benefit by not having to make a stressful decision about what to buy you.

Today, gift registries are a giant business and there is no shortage of companies that offer them. Most department stores and many other specialty stores have gift registries online, which makes it really easy for your friends and relatives to buy you gifts that you want. You typically just go to the store and record what you want. Many stores offer barcode readers so you can simply scan the items you want and now you can even register using the web (though walking through the store in person with bar code reader is more fun!).

Traditionally, couples would register for china, crystal, silverware, and expensive linens. In today's modern world, you can pretty much register for anything you want from camping gear to shares in a down-payment for your house. Make sure you offer a wide range of options--give your guests plenty of choice depending on their budgets.
